DVD's:

* Aida (Radames) Universal/DG
1989 Domingo, Millo, Zaijick, Milnes, Metropolitan Opera, Levine

This Met Aida is well-acted and well-sung all around. Highly Recommended.

* Les contes d'Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann) (Hoffmann) Kultur
1981 Domingo, Serra, Cotrubas, Baltsa, Powell, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Pretre

Placido Domingo puts in a strong performance as the down-and-out love-lorn poet Hoffmann, one of the best and most important roles of Domingo's career. His supporting cast is also strong, especially Cotrubas as Antonia. Each of Hoffmann's loves and each of the four villains are played by separate singers in this production. The film quality could be better, but otherwise this DVD is highly recommended.

* Otello (Otello) DG
1996 Domingo, Fleming, Morris, Croft, Bunell, Metropolitan Opera, Levine

"It is good to have so telling a reminder on DVD of Plácido Domingo's masterly assumption of the role of Otello: commanding in every way, particularly when at the Met. In New York in 1996 he was singing opposite Renée Fleming as Desdemona, then at her freshest and purest, yet also with power, looking and sounding girlish. James Levine's direction is high-powered from beginning to end, matching the singing of his principals, controlling the massive forces provided in this lavish production directed by Elijah Moshinsky with sets by Michael Yeargan and costumes by Peter J. Hall. Though James Morris is not the most sinister of Iagos, his singing is clean and firm, well varied in the two big monologues of Act II. Excellent singing too from Jane Bunell as a very positive Emilia and Richard Croft as Cassio, a tenor well contrasted with Domingo. The only bonuses on DVD are a picture gallery and trailer."

* La Traviata (Alfredo) Universal Studios
1982 Domingo, Stratas, MacNeil; Levine [Motion Picture]

This is a fine movie version of Giuseppe Verdi's touching opera La Traviata, well acted and sung by its two principals, Domingo and Stratas. Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, the movie displays elegant and elaborate sets and costumes.

Videos (VHS):

Otello (Otello) Bel Canto Society
1976 Domingo, Freni, Cappuccilli, Ciannella, Roni, Jori. La Scala Milan. Kleiber

This is a magnificent performance of what is perhaps Giuseppe Verdi's greatest opera. Placido Domingo is young and energetic and sings with a golden, unstrained voice. Mirella Freni makes a moving Desdemona, and Cappuccilli sings the part of Iago well. Kleiber leads a dramatically forceful reading of the score. The only drawback is the very poor quality of this video and the lack of subtitles. The performance itself, however, overcomes these drawbacks.
